Wade Sumpter: Defending steer wrestling champ to make 2009 debut at Reno Rodeo

The last time many rodeo fans saw defending Reno Rodeo champion Wade Sumpter was last December when he was face down on the arena floor at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas with a torn pectoral muscle and a steer wrestling world championship slipping away.
The next time we’ll see him is the 90th Reno Rodeo, which starts its 10-day run with Xtreme Bulls on Thursday and continues through the championship round on June 27. (read more)

Which horse did you draw?
Sisters Best was the horse’s name
Stock Contractor?
Frontier Rodeo Company, this was a first time PRCA Rodeo
Did you know about the Horse?
Frontier has some really nice bucking horses. They didn’t bring their “A” string for this rodeo but did bring their “B” string. They only buck these horses around 4 or 5 times a year. Matt Bright had Sisters Best in Corpus Christi, so I was able to get some info on her. I asked the stock contractor about her as well because I heard she jumps about two jumps and then falls down.
Tell me about your ride, did you feel strong, did the horse perform the way you thought it would? They tied her in the chute but she actually stood pretty good. She bailed out of the chute and turned back for one round and was kicking and felt really good. I was spurring her well and the 2nd time around she was still kicking good. Then she started to feel like she may go down so I leaned to the left and she fell to the right and slammed me in to the ground. I waited for help and no help came. Finally the pickup man threw a rope around her and helped her get up and I jumped off. I got a reride and that horse name was Good Eye. They didn’t turn the generators on so the arena was pretty dark by the time I rode this horse. It was actually a good ride, I was thinking a 78 or 79. I got off and asked the Judge and he said “It sounded real good Scotty but I couldn’t see your it” He didn’t mark it very good, he gave me a 75, which was one hole out of the money. The good thing is that I rode well and I was still confident and feeling good from the week before.

Amber Talks to OTRR about her Most Memorable Run…..

Tell OTRR about one of your most memorable runs? Ok there is a story behind this lol. One of my most memorable runs was at the IPRA Rodeo in St Tite, QU. It was in 2007 and I had Mighty Mouse up there. On the way up there while getting the horses off the trailer Mighty Mouse got into a bind and ending up flipping backwards out of the trailer, taking a chunk of hair off her head, puncturing her side right where the girth would go, as well as scrapes all over her hocks. She got up really dazed and loaded right back on the trailer for me. This was the biggest rodeo of the year and I was really afraid that I may have just hurt my horse and chances of placing up there. When we got up there it was POURING down rain and the arena was a mud hole. I was saddling up getting ready to run and had Mighty Mouse tied underneath the awning. Well the awning had filled up with water and as I was getting her saddle the awning BROKE right on top of her. She started to panic, and I could not get her untied. Luckily I got her calmed down and out from underneath the awning, but she was shaking and scared. Mind you this was about 30 min before we were to run. I got her saddle and walked her up to the arena. This rodeo is INSANELY loud, there are fireworks, and you have to almost run people over in the streets to get to the arena. She warmed up good and when we came down that alley I knew she was running hard and we had a shot to make it back to the short go. I ending up placing 6th in the Long Go making it back to the Short go. This run also helped me solidify my spot in the top 15 to make the IFR that year and just really showed me the heart and grit that Mighty Mouse has

Which horse did you draw?
I believe the name of the horse was Plus Sister
Stock Contractor?
Tom Reeves, Wild Card
Did you know about the Horse?
I actually didn’t know anything about this horse. The Stock Contractor, Tom Reeves, said that it was a good horse but I have never been to any of his rodeos. Tom Reeves is a World Champion saddle bronc rider.
Tell me about your ride, did you feel strong, did the horse perform the way you thought it would? I had a brand new attitude about this ride!! The horse really blew out of the chute and then the first two jumps she was kind of rolling around, I held my feet and she jumped up in the air and after that I commenced to spurring her better than I had spurred one in the past couple of years!! This horse was just a great horse for me to be on and I kept spurring her every jump and it felt great. I “thought” that I heard the whistle but I wasn’t absolutely positive, so I just kept spurring and yelled and asked the pickup man if the whistle blew. Haha! I spurred for four more jumps past the whistle. I scored a 79 on that ride and won 2nd! It felt great!!
Comments about the rodeo? Committee, hospitality, etc.
This rodeo used to be an IPRA Rodeo and for the past two years it has been a PRCA rodeo. The hospitality tent was great! They had every type of pizza you could ever want, it was pretty good. Great rodeo!
two south dakota cowgirls hit the summer trail, Jill moody and Lisa lockhart…

RAPID CITY — For Lisa Lockhart and Jill Moody, when June rolls around the rodeo season really kicks into high gear and as the weather warms up, so does the chase for the chance to compete at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in early December.
Moody, of Letcher, capped 2008 by winning the NFR barrel racing average gold buckle to go along with the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association’s reserve world championship and nearly $220,000 in prize money. Moody said Las Vegas and the NFR are never far from a rider’s mind… (read more)

How was your mental outlook going in to this rodeo?
My mental outlook was not good. I really didn’t want to go to this rodeo at all. I had heard that horse was not good and I let myself get negative about it. I should have stayed positive but instead I let negativity sneak in. I hadn’t been riding very well and I was down about that. I know that I should have stayed positive and I learned a good lesson.
Tell me about your ride, did you feel strong, did the horse perform the way you thought it would? Well first off my buddies lied! Haha They had said she was weak and she wasn’t weak at all. She was really strong! She blew out of the chute and about the third jump, she popped my elbow really hard, this is what we call “giving you a stinger.” This caused some scar tissue to break away from my elbow and my hand to go numb. I couldn’t squeeze the riggin with a numb hand so therefore I can’t lift on my riggin, which made it impossible to stay on. I lasted about five seconds. I went back to my old riggin this time and it felt great.
Comments about the rodeo? Committee, hospitality, etc.
This is a great rodeo, it is outdoors and the hospitality and committee doing a fantastic job.
I left Claremore with a brand new attitude!! I came in to this rodeo pretty down and negative and left pumped and ready to go. Stay tuned, up next……Conway, Arkansas!

Which horse did you draw?
I drew a horse named First Light
Stock Contractor?
J BAR J Rodeo Company
How was your horse in the chute?
The tied him in but he wasn’t bad
Did you learn about the horse before hand?
Yeah, my buddy Josh had him about six times. The lowest he had ever scored was a an 84! I had the horse that I thought I could get a good ride on and I was really excited.
Tell me about your ride, did you feel strong, did the horse perform the way you thought it would? The bronc bailed out of the chute and really kind of sucked back and jumped about four feet up in the air. He really did buck good but unfortunately my riggin didn’t feel right the entire ride. I never felt good on him and he bucked me off at about 7 seconds. I threw that riggin in the car and got my old riggin back out. I sold the other one, just never did work right with me and now I am back to my old riggin.
Comments about the rodeo? Committee, hospitality, etc.
Excellent Rodeo! I would say it is one of the best mid rodeo’s all year. This rodeo is always packed and the livestock is great!
Our fans wanted to know…

Amber Mostoller on Mighty Mouse
Amber, tell me what you do to prepare for the next rodeo season, do you ride colts, or take time off all together?
I always have something to ride, whether it is the open horse I am running at the time or some outside horses to ride and sell for customers. I think I would go crazy out of my mind if I didn’t have something to ride.
In that time off, do you give your horses off completely, or do you still ride on a regular schedule? If so, what does that schedule look like? do you use this time for tuning, or just letting them get some daily exercise?
The last few years I have been selling a lot of horses, so I really haven’t had anything longer than a year to give them time off. In general I try to ride at least 3 or 4 days a week if I am going to a show or rodeo on the weekend. Seasoned barrel horses that I take in for customers rarely see the barrels when I have them except to run. Now if there is something I do not like that they are doing on the pattern I might work them a couple days to get them right again.
