FORT PIERRE — Dually, the rodeo horse which was found injured July 5 after being taken from his pen at the Stanley County Fairgrounds, is still alive and slowly improving, owner Wendy Halweg said Monday.

“He’s recovering,” Halweg said. “The horse is not going to die. But his ability to ever perform again is in question.”

Halweg said Dually is still under veterinary care after suffering rope burns and cuts on his legs and face. (read more)

BAREBACK RIDING

Will Lowe accomplished what five other rodeo superstars couldn’t manage — a Calgary Stampede repeat.

For the second consecutive year, the tiny Texan capped his trip to the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth in spectacular fashion, winning the bareback riding bronze and the $100,000 paycheque that goes with it.

Lowe, the last cowboy in the chutes in the short round, hung on for 87.5 points on Duane Kesler’s Alley Trail, bumping Ryan Gray from his perch atop the leaderboard.

Gray registered 87 points on the Stampede’s Coconut Roll, while Kyle Bowers of Brooks was third after an 86-point ride on famed Grated Coconut.

Kaycee Feild, the other bareback specialist in the short round, was disqualified about slapping his ride with his free hand, a no-no on the rodeo trail.

TIE-DOWN ROPING

Ryan Jarrett’s father, DeJuan couldn’t leave the family dairy farm in Summerville, Ga., to see his son in the tie-down roping on Showdown Sunday. (read more)

Stock Contractor?
Sankey Rodeo Company

Did you know about the Horse?
I drew 283 Indian Sign. I didn’t know the horse, so I asked behind the chutes about him. He was “supposed” to be the best horse there.

Tell me about your ride, did you feel strong, did the horse perform the way you thought it would?
The horse was fine in the chute, he was a bit nervous but stood well. He blew out nicely and jumped up in the air and kicked real hard.  On the next jump I started spurring him and he turned back to the left and just kept rearing up and spinning. Never really kicked he just whirled around. I did ride him and scored a 71. Since this horse didn’t really buck, I would have thought I would have had an option of a reride but no option so it is what it is.

Rodeo committee?
Hospitality was great. This was a good rodeo; it was my first time there. The scenery was beautiful, the arena was surrounded by mountains.

After this rodeo we headed out on a 17 hour drive to Window Rock, AK…stay tuned!
