Days of '47 Rodeo: Bradley Harter seeks ride to title

By Steve Luhm
The Salt Lake Tribune
West Valley City Saddle bronc rider Bradley Harter’s quest for a world championship in 2009 actually started at last year’s National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.
After placing in six of the 10 rounds, earning more than $72,000 and finishing fifth at the NFR, Harter entered this season with confidence, focus and extra motivation.
“I saw that me being No. 1 wasn’t out of sight,” Harter said prior to Friday night’s session at the Days of ’47 Rodeo.
“It’s funny about the National Finals. When you leave there, you know you just left the best bucking horses and the best rodeo in the world and you have a fire lit under your butt. You’re ready to go again.” (read more)
Young steer wrestler fights through adversity to return to rodeo arena

By Mary Garrigan, Journal staff | Friday, July 24, 2009
A year after losing his right eye to the rough sport of steer wrestling, Clint Doll is back in the rodeo arena bulldogging steers.
“I had some really good role models at the place I was working at — people who taught me you didn’t let a little adversity slow you down,” Doll said this week while competing in Deadwood’s Days of ’76 rodeo….(read more)

But Swanberg, like hundreds of other people paying close attention to the search for people suspected of injuring Dually, isn’t from near Fort Pierre. She’s a resident of Elk River, Minn., and is one example of how a crime committed in Fort Pierre has become a national story.
“I just can’t see somebody taking a horse and abusing it like that horse was abused,” said Swanberg, who looks for news about Dually on the rodeo Web site…(read more)
Trevor Brazile eyes record-tying 7th rodeo crown
By MATT JOYCE (AP)
CHEYENNE, Wyo. — To hear Trevor Brazile tell it, the skinny cowboy blends in inconspicuously with the rest of the hard-traveling ropers and riders hustling from rodeo to rodeo at this time of year.
But when the Decatur, Texas, roper and his horse pop out of the chutes in hot pursuit of a steer, lariat circling overhead, the six-time all-around world champion’s signature skills come into focus.
“Luckily I’ve got great partners in my horses that make up for my weaknesses,” Brazile said this week during a break at Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. “And like I say, I’m a realist and I work hard.” (read more)
Cervi Wins Casper, Moves a Step Closer to Securing Her 12th Trip to the Wrangler NFR
by Jolee Lautaret
Casper, Wyo.-There are few records in the annuals of the WPRA that Sherry Cervi has not broken at one time or another. The Marana, Ariz., cowgirl is inching her way towards another one in 2009. Already an 11-time qualifier to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Cervi is looking for another trip to Las Vegas in 2009 – a trip which would put her in a tie for the second most qualifications in the WPRA’s 61-year history.
Cervi took a big step toward cementing her 2009 WNFR berth at the Central Wyoming Fair and Rodeo held in Casper July 7-11. Riding her latest champion, Stingray, Cervi took a pair of second places in the opening and short go rounds to claim the average title by a scant eight one-hundredths of a second. The win was worth $8,700 and moved Cervi into the top five of the current WPRA NFR standings.
Stingray is registered as MP Meter My Hay and was bred, raised, and trained by Cervi. The seven year old palomino mare is by PC Frenchmans Hayday, better known in barrel racing circles as Dinero.(read more)

clay tryan and cory petska big winners at california rodeo salinas

Things are certainly looking up for the tandem of Clay Tryan and Cory Petska. The team ropers got a big lift in the PRCA World Standings with a victory at California Rodeo Salinas, which ran July 16-19.
The duo won the average with a time of 45.2 seconds on five head and collected $11,706 each. Roping five steers over the long score was fun, not daunting for the team, according to Tryan. In Salinas, both the header and heeler come from the same box and behind the barrier, making it more of a “cowboy event,” said Tryan, a header from Billings, Mont. At most rodeos, the heeler comes from the other side of the chute and not behind the barrier. (read more)
