broken bones, bruises – all part of rodeo
By Kiersten Throndsen
NAMPA – Hundreds of cowboys are spending the week in the Treasure Valley show casing their athletic skills at the Snake River Stampede. While it’s meant to be entertainment for families it can be a risky job for those who make their living on the back of a beast.
They rope, they ride and for many it can look a little rough, but to the cowboys it’s just another day on the job.
“You don’t want to be a weenie,” said Cody Demoss, a professional saddle bronc rider.
It’s just another day on the job.
“Every time you crawl down in that chute with a wild animal it’s pretty intense,” said Demoss. (read more)

NAMPA — He’s had his hip jabbed by a bull’s horn, been kicked into the chutes by another bull and jammed his arm tangling with a third bull.
A good week?
“Yeah, it’s been fun,” said bull fighter Dusty Tuckness, who is making his Snake River Stampede debut this week. “Still here.” (read more)
Arrest warrant in case of stolen, abused horse awaits judge's signature
By Journal staff | Saturday, July 18, 2009
Stanley County Sheriff Brad Rathbun’s office is waiting for a judge’s signature on an arrest warrant in connection with the alleged theft and abuse of a rodeo horse during the July 4 weekend in Fort Pierre.
According to a Stanley County official, the case file was turned over Friday to Thomas Maher, the part time Stanley County state’s attorney, with a request for a warrant. As soon as a judge signs off on the warrant, arrests will come….(read more)

Think of the barrel racing course as a baseball diamond that requires the zig-zagging and precise cutting of a wide receiver’s route instead of a rounded home-run trot.
Three barrels are placed on the course like the three bases on a baseball diamond, except their distances from each other vary. The California Rodeo Salinas course is crammed on a track, making for quirky dimensions.
“This one here, a lot of people have a tough time with it because the second barrel is only three strides away,” said Rachael Ross of Winchester, who had no problem last year on her way to winning in Salinas. “But some are as big as 90 feet away.” (read more)
rodeo hopes "wild child" fills stands…

Steamboat Springs — Faced with the same gloomy economic outlook that seems to have given the rest of city indigestion, the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series vowed last winter not to go on a diet.
It swore to stick to its traditional 10-week, 20-performance schedule, to pull all the stops when it came to attracting competitors, and to roll out the same glitzy lineup of clowns and nationally renowned rodeo acts fans had become accustomed to…(read more)

Did you know about the Horse?
I drew a horse named Lil Brother, he is a full brother to a horse named Brother that has been to the NFR. Lil Brother is a good horse.
Tell me about your ride, did you feel strong, did the horse perform the way you thought it would?
He leaned in the chute but other than that he was pretty good. We didn’t have to tie him in. The ride started well, he blew out and I started spurring him. He made a big move to the right and I stayed with him and was handling him good. About 5 seconds in to the ride, my right leg spurred over his neck and I couldn’t get a hold of him. This horse is so strong that he ripped 14 layers of tape in half jerked me down on my head in to the mud. That horse pretty much tortured me, he said “GET OFF” and I did.
At this point Scotty, what is your mental state? You have been going strong through Cowboy Christmas and doing a lot of driving, how are you physically and mentally? At this point I am very tired. I have been gone for 5 days and have had a total of about 10 hours sleep and exhaustion is setting in. Everything on my body hurts and is extremely sore. My elbows, my shoulders, groin, back, neck, just about everything is sore but by now my body has just gotten used to being in pain. I can really start to just block the soreness out, the big thing is being tired. When you sleep it isn’t a good sleep, you are sleeping sitting up in a vehicle, I am just looking forward to a good night’s rest.

Did you know about the Horse?
I drew Miss Daisy and I didn’t know her. I asked around and what I was told was she was a weak hopper.
Tell me about your ride, did you feel strong, did the horse perform the way you thought it would?
Miss Daisy blew out of the gate really well. She took to bucking well and she was kicking flat out behind her, not up over her head but flat. She felt really strong. I spurred her well and I was awarded 68 points! I think my score should have been higher but apparently the judges did not.
This was a good rodeo. They had a hospitality tent before the rodeo and I don’t eat before I ride so I didn’t get to really enjoy it. Justin Sports Medicine was at this rodeo. It was a good crowd and nice facility.

Cowboys compete for buckle, prizes and pride at the Salinas Rodeo

The 99th Annual California Rodeo, Salinas kicked off Sunday with a week-long series of events, from Cowboy Poetry to the Kiddie Kapers Parade, which precede the edge-of-your-seat action that keeps fans in the stands.
Cowboys from around the world will take to the ring in the professional bull riding event at 5 p.m. today at the Salinas Sports Complex — the first of seven rodeo events this weekend where cowboys risk their lives for prizes and pride.
“These belt buckles are very coveted,” said Mandy Roth, the marketing manager for the rodeo. “These men live and breathe the sport, and this is where it all comes together.” (read more)
