Tied down at an early age: '08 Farm-City co-champ Tuf Cooper

Joe Beaver. Trevor Brazile. Fred Whitfield. Just to rope in the same go-round with the legendary trio would send a few jolts of nerves through the best of cowboys. But for 19-year-old Tuf Cooper, it’s just another day at the rodeo arena.
“I grew up around them,” said Cooper, the 2008 PRCA tie-down and overall rookie of the year. “I have the most respect for all of them. They are all great guys and great ropers.”
Cooper will compete against Brazile (his brother-in-law) and Whitfield in the tie-down roping event this week at the 22nd annual Farm-City Pro Rodeo, which begins Wednesday and runs through Saturday in Hermiston.
A native of Decatur, Texas, Cooper shared the 2008 FCPR tie-down roping title with Jeff Chapman of Athens, Texas, after both posted a time of 17.8 seconds on two head. Cooper is looking forward to defending his title.
“Last year was my first time in Oregon,” Cooper said. “It was awesome. I love the Northwest and the fans are great.” (read more)

amber mostoller Rodeo Update…July 5th..Ellicottville, NY & Fairmont, WV

Amber and Mighty Mouse
We left South Bend and headed to my moms house near Cleveland, OH which was about half way from South Bend to Ellicottville. I figured we could get a few good hours of sleep put the horses in stalls and wake up early to make it to Ellicottville for the 2:00pm perf. I had my alarm set for 8:00am, thinking if we got out of there by 10:00am we would be good. WELL my phone doesn’t switch from Central to Eastern time so as we were pulling out of the driveway (at what I thought was 10:00am I look at my truck clock and it says 11:00am! Soo once again we were running late, and once again we get to the rodeo during the steer wrestling. This has always been a great arena for me in the past. It is nice sand, but can get pretty deep. I was lucky to draw on top of the ground. I have run there the last two years on different horses and placed 2nd and 3rd. I was hoping Abby would pull through for me and she sure enough did. She had a near flawless run and we tied for the lead!! We did end up getting beat by one person so w split 2/3rd but I was tickled to death. Mesa ended up 7th as well. After we ran we literally ran back to the trailer unsaddled and headed out to Fairmont, WV. Fairmont started at 7:00pm, Ellicottville had started at 2:00pm and its a 5 hour drive…you do the math…
We knew we were gonna be cutting it close, but had friends already at Fairmont that were going to try to stall the rodeo as much as possible for us
It is a good thing that people in Pennsylvania drive crazy because we had the cruise set at 80 and we were getting passed. lol When we got into West Virginia Mesa jumped out into the trailer so she could start saddling horses through the escape door in the trailer. KIDS DO NOT TRY THAT AT HOME… IT IS NOT SMART AND REALLY PRETTY DANGEROUS….but God was looking over us and when we pulled the gates they were on intermission, horses were saddled and we took off to the arena. I realized Abby had pulled a shoe at Ellicottville, but she seemed to be ok so I ran her. The first girl fell all the way down and the ground got worse from there. I was seriously considering turning out when they called my name. I said a little prayer, took a deep breath, and let Abby go at her pace. She took care of me and herself, although she did slip a little at the 1st. A 16.6 won it and we ran a 16.7 for a 5th place check!! Abby is really starting to show me her grit and ability to adapt to EVERYTHING.
Mike Johnson clinches tour finale spot
Mike Johnson, undoubtedly the world’s most consistent calf roper in pro rodeo history, has clinched a spot in the Wrangler Canadian Tour finale set for the Calgary Corral Oct. 2-4.
And the 45-year-old Oklahoman has moved into eighth place in the Canadian standings in his bid to qualify for the November Canadian Finals Rodeo at Edmonton.
Johnson, who has worked 17 Canadian rodeos this year, cashed second with an 8.2-second run on the weekend at Dawson Creek, B.C., the 10th of the 11 Tour rodeos that lead to the Calgary event.
He’s now second in the Tour standings with 343 points, enough that he can’t be moved out of the top 10 at the closing tour rodeo at Armstrong, B.C. on the Labor Day weekend.
Johnson also caught last money hole at the other weekend rodeo in Olds, boosting his weekend income to $2,256. That pushed his Canadian season’s earnings to $13,828.
Johnson, the 2004 Calgary Stampede $50,000 champion, has amassed nearly $2.2 million in earnings over a 28-year career and has qualified for the year-end world championships an event record 23 times.
He is currently 26th in the world standings with nearly $34,000 to his credit, about $10,000 shy of the top 15, who qualify for the December Wrangler National Finals Rodeo at Las Vegas. (read more)

The Division of Criminal Investigation is involved in the case of Dually, the stolen horse. KELOLAND News received dozens of emails, phone calls and faxes, from Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas and California, from people who want to see whoever stole Dually brought to justice.
Horse lovers are angry. Not only that someone would steal someone else’s horse, but also that someone might have abused it.
“I would want to know who that person is and put them in prison right away,” Riley Riepma said.
Thirteen-year-old Riepma has been riding horses since she was two. She shows them now and just finished in the top 10 at the nationals in New Mexico….(read more)
Amber Mostoller Rodeo Update: July 4th, South Bend, Indiana
We woke up the next morning to TONS or rain. Mesa’s dad watched the radar and wasn’t sure if he wanted her going or not b/c of running in the mud. I packed up my trailer and was going anyway b/c my dad was going to be there and then I was going to visit my aunt and little brother on the way to Ellicottville, NY after South Bend. Her dad decided to let her go at the last minute so we switched trailers again and headed out for South Bend. We drove through rain the entire trip but when we got to South Bend the arena was DRY. We arrived during the steer wrestling, and I was in the perf so I saddled up and headed to the arena. Abby had a pretty smooth run, but pulled out of the 3rd a little bit and we again ended up a couple holes out. We ran a 16.2 with a few mistakes and a 15.9 won it! Mesa had an awesome run on Junior and ended up 2nd with a 15.9 as well.
Rodeo clown, Rick Young celebrates 50 years at Sikeston

By Heartland News
SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) – It was a muddy night for cowboys on the opening night of the Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo.
Tuesday night storms left the rodeo grounds very muddy. That made things very nasty, especially for the steer wrestlers who had to wallow in the mud. So much for those nice clean western shirts and jeans. As far as walking, cowboys were up to their ankles in the soupy mess.
Someone who didn’t mind the muddy track was rodeo clown Rick Young….(read more)
