Molly Powell was mentally preparing herself to get out of competitive barrel racing.

For the past two years, her horse slipped at high-paying winter rodeos, first at San Antonio, Texas, last year and Denver this January.

“I started out the past two years with plans to go to the National Finals Rodeo,” Powell said. “But those slips put us too far behind to make a run.”

Along with a slow start this winter, she and her husband Turtle were thinking of starting a family. While her husband was chasing the NFR in team roping, Powell spent her time filming a barrel racing video and putting on clinics around the country.
