Mezei takes direct route to rodeo final

Two years ago, bull rider Devon Mezei got into the Canadian Finals Rodeo through the back door because of someone else’s misfortune.

Only the top 12 cowboys from money won at Canadian rodeos make it to the CFR, the pot of gold at the end of rodeo’s year-long trail. Mezei placed 13th, but he got in because Come Bouvier broke his neck riding at bull in Kamloops, B.C.

Last year, until the final two rodeos of the year, Mezei had his nose pressed against the glass again. But, even though he was fighting a torn groin, he finished second at McCord, Sask., and it was just enough to get him in.

This year there was no question. Bouvier comes in to the Nov. 11-15 CFR as the No. 1 seed, having won $36,308–$3,500 more than Brett Thompson…..(read more)
