After one-year absence, Clay Tryan returns to the NFR

High risk-high reward is the nature of his chosen business. In team roping, it’s be fast or go home.
But when Tryan absolutely needed a big throw, with every inch of his back against the wall, he produced the most important loop of his 2009 rodeo season. Tryan, of Billings, qualified for his eighth National Finals Rodeo on the final Sunday of the 2009 regular season.
Needing at least $1,100 to clinch a qualifying spot, Tryan and partner Cory Petska won more than $1,800 at a rodeo in San Bernardino, Calif., to punch their ticket to Las Vegas.
The two had competed at the Justin Boots Championships in Omaha, Neb., the previous days and had won $3,783. But Tryan’s return to Las Vegas was far from guaranteed. They flew to California on Sept. 27 for two rodeos.
“I knew when we started what we needed to do,’’ said Tryan of his pivotal day. “I was angry about the situation I was in.’’ (read more)
Feathers were flying at the Great Lakes Circuit finals for Blue Moon!!!

Sneaky little Twins
Well folks…the Great Lakes Circuit Finals has started. WHOO HOO!!! The North American Livestock Show was such a highlight for me when I was a little girl and going with my sister ,Tall Bearded Man (my dad) and Southern Lady (my mom). My dad rodeoed every weekend but put that on the back burner when me and Guinness came along. However we always went to the GLC so dad could see all his buddies. To a little kid……it didn’t get much better than the North American Livestock Show. I have many, many memories of this show but one stands out from when I was a little girl. I think Guinness and I were around 4 or 5 and I am sure high on life (and probably cotton candy) walking around the trade show with Mom and Dad. One of the highlights of the trade show for us was the Petting Zoo. Thinking back on it now, it kind of cracks me up, we were farm girls and had all of the animals that were in this little Petting Zoo on our farm at home, but we loved it anyway. The ONE thing in particular that I was completely captivated with was these baby ducks that they had. Now for you guys that haven’t seen the “duck exhibit” let me paint you the picture! Basically what it is is a small aluminum water tank filled with water with a “slide like” contraption in the middle of it. The ducks walk up the slide and at the top is a little tray of duck food, just as soon as they reach out to get a bite, they slide down the slide and then the entire process starts again. Well let me tell ya, as a kid…I thought this was the coolest damn thing….I was absolutely mesmerized. After a while I decided….ONE OF THOSE DUCKS IS COMING HOME WITH ME!!!!!! This is how it went down:
Blue Moon looks at Guinness
Blue Moon: Guinness, I want one of those ducks!
Guinness: BLUE MOON!!! NO!! That is stealing and that is very bad, Mom and Dad would not be happy. No! (Guess who was the goody goody twin??)
Blue Moon: If that man that is sitting there watching the ducks, gets up, I am grabbing one!
Guinness: NO!! You can’t take a duck, this is not good Blue Moon! Not good!
Blue Moon: I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!!
Guinness: They are all friends Blue Moon, don’t take one away from it’s friends. It isn’t fair (ohh, now she is gonna try guilt)
Blue Moon: What?? We will give it a great home!! (guilt never worked well with me)
Guinness: They are cute (haha, I need her to help me and I am getting her to come over to my side!!)
Blue Moon: Watch Mom and Dad and make sure they don’t come over here!! EEEKK! The man is getting up! I am making my move!!
I hop over the rope (haha, like a rope is gonna keep me away from a cute little duckling) and grab me a duck out of the water! I sail back over the rope and stuff the duck in my down jacket and zip it up. YIPPPEE! I HAVE THE DUCK, I HAVE THE DUCK!! Oh and there is a HUGE grin on Guinness’s face. She tries to act innocent…she is just as sneaky as me!!
So, after about 20 minutes we leave the trade show and I am so excited, my GRAND MASTER PLAN of duck stealing has WORKED!! We get almost to the truck and all of sudden:
QUACK, QUACK, QUACK (a few feathers come out of my coat) QUACK, QUACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(uh oh)
Tall Bearded Man: What the hell is that???
Blue Moon: I have no idea
Tall Bearded Man: BLUE MOON!!!!!! Young lady, you open that jacket RIGHT NOW!
(this is gonna get bad)
I slowly open my jacket and show the little duckling to my Mom and Dad……….
Twenty minutes later (after a pouty apology to the man that owned the ducks) the duck was back with his friends and enjoying his slide………I however was crying all the way back to the farm….duckless.

Lisa Novak chats with OTRR about being a WPRA Director

What are some of the obstacles that you face being the director for the GLC?
That’s a great question! It is very difficult to be both a barrel racer and a director! I have learned to handle both jobs but it has been very hard to do so. There are times when I am getting ready to barrel race and I am needed as a director. Many times people forget that I am there to compete like they are, and come up to me as I am getting ready to run and have questions. All I can say is that I have learned to multi-task very well!
What type of music do you listen to that pumps you up for your run? Do you have a theme song?
I really don’t listen to any certain type of music but I do have certain songs that remind me of how fun rodeoing is! I always get pumped at intermission listening to the music before the barrel race!
I know that most rodeo athletes try to eat healthy while out on the road, what do you grab for when you want to splurge?
Ha! Pepsi is my favorite but when I really splurge I get kwik Trip sugar cookies! Yummmm!
Do any of your horses that you are currently hauling have an annoying habits that drives you crazy?
YES!!!!!! They all think they need to be together so when one leaves, they all throw a fit. Drives me CRAZY!!!!
When you are not doing something with your horses, what do you like to do for fun?
I enjoy spending time with my family! Evenings together watching TV and eating popcorn are what I call great fun! I also enjoy cooking! Yes cooking! I have stacks of cookbooks that I drag out every night and try to find something new to try!
OTRR would like to give a huge THANK YOU to Lisa Novak, for taking the time to be a part of our website!! We hope to have you back soon!
Dont miss out!!! THE Daily Edge Giveaway

Spencer Turner……He's BACK!!!!!!!!

Spencer Turner, Winning Ride at IFR 2009
Hello ontherodeoroad.com Fans,
It has been a long while since I have updated, I had a pretty good injury to my foot in May and when I came back to action in August I severely bruised my other leg (at least that’s all I think I did, because of course, I did not have a Doctor check it out). I decided to sit the rest of the season out and start again in January and attend rodeos pretty hard again then. That was my plan until I had a friend bring to my attention that even though I had not rodeo’d a lot this year, I still had done well enough at the ones I went to, that I had qualified to the IPRA’s Central and Southern Region Finals.
I went into the Finals in Springfield, MO with a good attitude, even though I hadn’t really thought about rodeo a lot this year, nor have I even practiced or gone over my gear. I pretty much just threw my saddle and gear bag in the truck and went, hoping all would turn out well. The First round I had drawn a horse I knew well. It was branded 30 Black Widow of Hampton Rodeo Company. I had been on this horse several times and won a 1st every time I was on her except one, and I won a 2nd that time. I was blessed to have drawn her for my first horse back in many months. I was a little worried that I wasn’t in the mental or physical shape to ride like I was riding before I got injured. Those worries soon disappeared when I crawled on her back in nodded. Everything came back like riding a bike (a big, kicking and bucking bike that is). Everything felt great, and I felt like I spurred her well and rode her the best I could. I scored an 82 and was blessed to win the 1st round. That made me feel awesome considering the bronc riders that were entered were some of the top hands in the region.
The second round I drew horse 10, a horse I had not ever been on but have seen, and was very happy to have plucked her out of the draw. She threw a little fit in the chute and when the gate opened she did not live up to her previous trips. She hopped skipped and run-bucked down the pen, throwing her head everywhere. I scored a 64 with an option for a re-ride. Anybody that knows me knows that I took the reride. Not being cocky but confident in my riding, I didn’t go down there to be 64 points when there was a chance I could do better in that round. The reride was 05, a horse I did not know at all, neither did very many of the bronc riders. She stood well in the chute and when I nodded she came rearing out pretty high and hard. I marked her out great, but spurred over my rein. When I went to spur her my foot got caught in the rein and pulled some rein out of my hand making it hard to ride her while she was ducking and diving a lunging forward. We parted ways early and I scored a Zero. I have no regrets about taking my reride and giving up my 64 points for a Zero. The Lord has a plan for everything and everything happens for a reason. If I wouldn’t have taken the reride I would have always wondered what could have happened, now I know. It just wasn’t meant for me to do well in the second round, and I am good with that.
In the 3rd and final round I drew H26. I knew this horse and had been on her twice before and won a 2nd once and the second time I jumped off early thinking I had rode the required 8 seconds, but it had only been 7.5 seconds. She is a real bear in the chute and has smashed me several times in the past. When she bucks she is really strong and bucks with her head high in the air. When horses are high headed when they buck it makes them feel a lot stronger and it really makes the swells of your saddle drop out from under you hard. I had a game plan this time; I made sure I had a guy cover her eyes before I got on her and I was real smooth and didn’t waste a lot of time in the chute. This plan worked great. She came out hard and fast and I marked her out good and went on spurring her throughout the ride. She was really bucking hard and throwing her head high. The swells of my saddle kept getting yanked out from my legs and I don’t think I spent too much time actually in my saddle. This didn’t keep me from spurring her good. It was a good hard battle and when the buzzer sounded I jumped off feeling like I had done well. I scored a 78, which was just out of reach for money in that round. I ended up 4th in the average. All in all I am very pleased with this weekend. I am thankful and give the Glory to God for allowing the talents He has given me, to shine through even though I felt a little rusty from the long break in my competition.
It was a good finals and the crowd was great, the stock bucked good, and the committee was very generous to the cowboys and cowgirls. We received Jackets for making the finals and they gave Championship Knives to the Event Winners.
Next week brings the PRCA’s Great Lakes Circuit Finals in Louisville, KY, which was also a surprise to make considering I didn’t go to very many and haven’t been to one since May. I was blessed to make money at the few I went to which qualified me to attend Circuit Finals. I feel good going into next weekend!!

Deb Renger relying on Reiner to get back in winning saddle

Deb Renger can hardly wait for January to arrive.
Canada’s most prominent barrel racer still has the Canadian Finals Rodeo in front of her, but she’s dying to be somewhere down there in the U.S. Southwest.
Who can blame her?
If it were any other year, the five-time Canadian champion would get the edge off by spending two weeks in Las Vegas competing at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
She’s been there five times before and returned home to freshen up before launching the new season in mid-January.
But, this year that Las Vegas break is missing.
The Okotoks horsewoman didn’t qualify for the $5.7 million world championships because her Stakes horse Reiner didn’t come off the disabled list until the middle of May.
He’d been off since last September after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on both hind knees. (read more)
