J.W.Harris takes world bull riding title

J.W. Harris wrapped up his second straight world bull riding title Friday night despite failing to earn any money during the first nine rounds of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

Harris, from May, Texas, equaled a feat accomplished last by bull rider Bill Nelson, who won the 1971 title without earning any money in the finals — then held in Oklahoma City.

Harris broke his right (riding) hand in the second round, and hasn’t completed a qualified ride. Freckles Brown (1962) is the only bull rider to win a world championship without completing a ride at the NFR. After missing four rounds, Harris was bucked off Hawaiian Ivory in the ninth round.

“It’s all the hard work throughout the year,” Harris said. “It just proves that rodeo is 365 days a year. You have to go all year, and I did give myself a cushion in case something did happen I would be all right. I would have liked to finish 10-for-10, but stuff happens.”…..(read more)

Chad Masters and Jade Corkill keep gold buckle dreams alive with world record

Chad Masters and Jade Corkill won’t know until Saturday night if they’ll have a gold buckle in team roping. What they do have after Round Nine of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is the fastest team roping run in the history of professional rodeo.

Masters, of Clarksville, Tenn., and Corkill, of Fallon, Nev., roped their steer in 3.3 seconds to beat the record of 3.4 seconds, which JoJo Lemond of Andrews, Texas and Randon Adams of Logandale, Nev., had posted only minutes before.

“I knew to beat a 3.4, I needed to throw pretty quick,” Masters said. “It was a wonder I didn’t throw before I nodded almost. It’s probably maybe a good thing we didn’t have time to think about it, because after watching the 3.4, it was the best run I’ve ever seen in my life. It happened at that right time.”….(read more)

Kaycee Feild helped by workouts prior to National Finals Rodeo

Elk Ridge bareback rider Kaycee Feild believes a pre-Wrangler National Finals Rodeo conditioning program has helped him survive the day-after-day grind.

The National Finals conclude a 10-round run at the Thomas & Mack Center on Saturday night.

“Ten straight [days] in the summer isn’t anything like this,” Feild said. “Here, you’re getting on the best horses every night. That really puts a toll on your body. But I worked to get in shape before I came down, and I’m still feeling really good.”

Asked what he did to prepare for the NFR, Feild smiled…..(read more)
