Rodeo: Inconsistent bull-riding judge is suspended
When the Professional Bull Riders tour stops at Cowboys Stadium on Feb. 20, judges will be allowed to score cowboys up to 100 points on a ride.
But knowing what happened to veteran judge Jeff Shearer shortly after a tour stop earlier this month in Sacramento, Calif., officials will think twice before they post the scores at the Arlington Built Ford Tough Series show.
The PBR’s Rules and Regulations Committee determined in an emergency meeting Jan. 18 there was a significant inconsistency in judges’ scores at the Sacramento Classic.
Shearer, who was one of four judges who evaluated the rides, will be suspended for five events.
In the second to last ride of the event Jan. 16, Shearer gave Elliott Jacoby an 18 (out of a possible 25) for his ride on a bull named Necessary Evil. The score was well below the other judges’ range of scores (21.5, 22 and 21), and resulted in Jacoby losing the event title narrowly to J.B. Mauney.
The PBR determined the inconsistency was unreasonable. Shearer will be suspended until Feb. 26, when the tour stops in St. Louis. (read more)
Student rodeo riders learn the ropes from professionals at Fort Worth stock show
FORT WORTH – J.W. Harris whirled the steering dial of the radio-controlled bull with devilish glee. With every spin of his fingers, the Robo Bull churned.
“You ready?” Harris called out to L.D. Bell High School rodeo rider Hunter West as the 15-year-old bounded up onto the bull. Hunter got set, then nodded, his jaw clenched and his arm held aloft.
The bull jerked to life, red eyes glowing. The life-size replica of a real bucking bull is more precise than a traditional mechanical bull. Mounted on rubber wheels, it not only bucks but also moves in circles, mimicking the swirling and diving of the fearsome animals that Harris rides for a living.
Chest out!” Harris commanded as he ran the bull through a dizzying spin. “Your feet are gonna wanna come back, but don’t let ‘em. Good, good. Now, if you feel your feet come up, don’t look down.”
There’s nothing like getting your rodeo instruction from the reigning bull-riding world champion.
“Make sure there’s no daylight between your knees and the bull, keep your chest out,” Hunter repeated to himself as he jumped down from his lesson. “The first time I rode a real bull, my buddy said, ‘Just hold on!’ ” (read more)
JJ Elshere, Trevor Brazile among the winners in Denver
Courtesy of the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo – By Susan Kanode of Cowgirl Imaging
J.J. Elshere couldn’t have been any happier
with his performance at the 104th edition of the Ntational Western Stock
Show Rodeo.
The Quinn, S.D., bronc rider was the high money winner at the
2010 rodeo after having won money in every round of competition. Elshere won
the first round, tied for first in the second round and tied for fifth in
the finals. When all of the total were added up, he had 242 points on three
rides, ahead of fellow South Dakotan, Jeff Willert, who had 237 points.
Elshere had a seven-point lead on the field coming into the
finals with 167 points. Behind him was another South Dakota bronc rider and
former Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world champion Chad Ferley
with 161.
Ferley made an outstanding effort on Calgary Stampede’s horse
named Lunatic Fringe, but failed to have his feet in the correct position
when the horse left the bucking chute so was disqualified. Basically all
Elshere needed was a qualified ride and the title was his.
Trevor Brazile is pursuing his eighth world champion all-around
title with a vengeance. He won the all-around title here collecting $11,961
in tie-down and team roping. The bulk of that money, $11,299 came in
tie-down where he also won the championship.
He competed in the team roping last Sunday and then was in
tie-down roping on Monday and Tuesday. He left Denver to go rope at the Fort
Worth Stock Show & Rodeo where he was also successful, then flew back here
for the finals. (read more)
Pocatello works to keep the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo
POCATELLO — Mayor Brian Blad said the city will do what it can in the future to make sure the Gate City continues hosting the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo.
“That is why I’m here,” he said Friday evening while holding a foam plate with steak on it.
Blad, who he is in his first term as mayor, was one of the many guests who showed up at the Pocatello Frontier Rodeo Association’s Dueling Pianos, one of the local rodeo committee’s many fundraisers. The event took place in one of the Bannock County fairground show rooms and aimed to raise money for the annual DNCFR….(see more)
Itasca cowboy Chris Harris in first place with enthusiastic bareback bronc ride
During his high school days in the mid 1990s, Chris Harris conjured up the greatest of excuses to skip classes when the Stock Show Rodeo was bucking in Fort Worth.
“I’d even have my dad’s secretary call me in sick,” Harris said. “I was skipping school 17 and 18 years ago so I could be here, and today, I’m still just as excited to be here.”
Harris, a 33-year-old, six-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier whose father, Chris, is a longtime state senator from Arlington, displayed his enthusiasm for Fort Worth’s storied rodeo in dramatic fashion by pacing the bareback bronc riding field with a score of 80.
Harris took the first-round lead as one of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s biggest shows of the year kicked off its 17-day, 30-performance run Friday night at Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum.
Taking the opening-performance lead was a moral victory for Harris, an Itasca resident who underwent surgery last June to repair his right shoulder which supports his riding arm. After the operation, Harris said he was advised by notable rodeo sports physician Tandy Freeman that he might be forced to retire.
“When I woke up, Tandy told me that he wasn’t making any promises,” Harris said. “So, I just prayed a lot and kept the faith that everything would work out fine. Now, it’s clear that the Lord has a purpose for me.” (read more)

$10,000 ride is just the ticket
WARWICK cowboy Lucas Wilson is home from a year of saddle bronc riding and travelling around North America in a black Cadillac.
Wilson and best mate Tyrell Smith, of Canada, compete as the War Party Enterprises team and can travel full-time to rodeos as they have excellent sponsors and pool their winnings.
While Smith finished the higher of the two, in 20th place on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys’ Association (PRCA) standings in 2009, Wilson gained the bigger payout, $US10,000, for second place in the saddle bronc ride at Miles City, Montana.
After he scored 88 at Miles City, Wilson thought his score would be enough to win but the next cowboy out scored 89 and relegated him to second.
The 88 at Miles City equalled Wilson’s career best, an 88 on the Happy Gill-horse Paper Rock at Southport three years ago.
Wilson was a full-time cowboy in 2009 but will return to the US in late March with a sporting visa which will allow him to obtain other work if necessary.
On the July 4 Independence Day weekend in 2009, there were nine PRCA rodeos during the three-day celebration. (read more)
