(Sturgis, SD)AHL release-  The American Horse League on behalf of its membership in South Dakota and nationwide condemn the actions of the individuals who stole and abused a horse.  The horse belonged to South Dakota Cowgirl Wendy Halweg, and the American Horse League asks that the authorities do everything possible to find the offenders quickly and prosecute them for theft abuse and neglect.
Wendy Halweg and her Barrel Horse Dually were competing in the Ft. Pierre Rodeo at the Stanley County Fair Grounds over the weekend of the Fourth of July.  On Sunday morning, after competing, Wendy’s horse was stolen from the grounds and later found tied to a tree with extensive injuries.  The fate of this once extremely athletic horse is still unknown. FORT PIERRE — When Marsha Swanberg heard about what had happened to the rodeo horse Dually after the Fourth of July Rodeo in Fort Pierre, she said she got sick to her stomach and cried for an hour. She still follows the case of the injured horse on a daily basis.

But Swanberg, like hundreds of other people paying close attention to the search for people suspected of injuring Dually, isn’t from near Fort Pierre. She’s a resident of Elk River, Minn., and is one example of how a crime committed in Fort Pierre has become a national story.

“I just can’t see somebody taking a horse and abusing it like that horse was abused,” said Swanberg, who looks for news about Dually on the rodeo Web site…(read more)

FORT PIERRE — Dually, the rodeo horse which was found injured July 5 after being taken from his pen at the Stanley County Fairgrounds, is still alive and slowly improving, owner Wendy Halweg said Monday.

“He’s recovering,” Halweg said. “The horse is not going to die. But his ability to ever perform again is in question.”

Halweg said Dually is still under veterinary care after suffering rope burns and cuts on his legs and face. (read more)

Major abuse done to rodeo horse

Jul 09, 2009 – 04:05:11 CDT
By LAUREN DONOVAN
Bismarck Tribune

A barrel horse that won the recent Dickinson Roughrider Rodeo and took third at Killdeer’s Fourth of July rodeo Saturday was stolen from a South Dakota rodeo grounds Sunday and abused, if not tortured.

The 12-year-old Dually remains under a veterinarian’s care in South Dakota, where it was taken Sunday afternoon after its owner and the Stanley County (S.D.) sheriff were informed where it had been dropped off in a holding pen.

The horse was taken from a rodeo pen at Fort Pierre, S.D., sometime after 4:30 a.m. Sunday and discovered several hours later in a pen in town, said Sheriff Brad Rathbun….(read more)

Justice for dually!!!

For those of you who have not yet heard, there was a man-made (more like coward-made) travesty committed by Ft. Pierre, SD locals. Dually, a horse owned by a South Dakota WPRA, SDRA, and NRCA barrel racer was stolen from the pen he was being kept in for the night at Ft. Pierre. As if the theft was not enough, what the cowards that took Dually did to him was too cruel for words. I will give no details, but these young men abused and tortured this horse to the point of almost no return. His injuries are extensive, and the methods used to create these injuries are nothing short of despicably sick and twisted.

From around the 26th of June through the 4th of July, most of the cowboys and cowgirls in the Badlands circuit have traveled to 8-12 rodeos, some have even gone to more. When we travel, we always look for the safest place to stay, but we look for the safest place for our horses first, not for ourselves. We spend thousands of dollars each year on joint supplements, and vitamins for our “kids” as many of us call them. We pay for massages, acupuncture, and chiropractic work for our 4-legged kids as well. Our animals are always our first priority. To think that some heartless individual would take one of our horses, and literally attempt to rip him to shreds sickens everyone in the rodeo community, and it should sicken those not in the rodeo community as well.

To abuse someone else’s property, and literally have no respect for life in any regard is disgusting, and the crimes committed on Dually WILL NOT BE TAKEN LIGHTLY. We are a tight knit group, and we will stand together to help those who were injured by these horrible human beings. There will be a reward offered for any information as to who was involved in this crime in any way. . . Please come forward and show that you do not accept what was done to Dually! Any donations for vet bills can be made one of two ways. . . They can be sent to 1st national bank of SD, Attention Wendy Halweg, Dually Benefit, 210 N. Lawler, Mitchell, SD, 57301. . .or donations can be made through paypal to the address justicefordually@gmail.com
